THE GIFT OF THRIFT

THRIFTING (v.) – to thrift; refers to the act of shopping at a thrift store, second-hand, feal market, garage sale, or a shop for a charitable organization as a way to find interesting items at a bargain price.
This is a great way to add some spice to your wardrobe with minimal cost.  It does take patiences and a  proper mindset in order to walk away from your experience with a smile on your face.
BASIC THRIFTING RULES:
1. Take a friend! No more than 2.
2. Wear an outfit & shoes that are easy to take on & off. (Do you need some pointers on what to wear? CLICK HERE)
3. This process takes time.  Accept it now that you will spend a couple of hours at the location, so make it an event!
4. Remember, it’s not what it currently is, but what it can become.  Think creative!
5. Only buy what you definitely want and can fit, because most thrift stores do not allow returns.
6. Be sure to check out multiple locations.  Not all thrift stores are created equal.
7. Do some intel!  Find out when is the best time to shop at your thrift location because of sales, bargains, or optimal selection opportunities.  (i.e. Sunday mornings at 9am – 11am is 50% off current price)
Happy Thrifting!

OVER THE SHOULDER…

QUICK TIP: For women unsure if they are wearing the correct size bra, rest assured most of you probably are, but there is an easy solution.   Alex from Victoria Secrets states, “We all should be getting our bra size measured every 6 months”.  Why do you ask?  We found out there are constant factors that shift our bra sizes such as:

1. Having a baby

2. Losing weight

3. Exercising and gaining muscle

If you have experienced major weightloss you need to get re-measured sooner than later. Wearing the wrong bra size can cause spillage making the double bubble or can cause gapping due to the bra being too large.  It is an easy & quick process in order to find out if our size has changed.  Even if you are 100% sure of your bra size, you still need to recheck every 6 months.

If you live near Columbia Mall, go to Victoria Secrets and ask for Alex.  She will gladly assist you and provide you with your primary & sister size, as well as show you some current styles that will compliment and fit you perfectly.

FALL OVERHAUL

Medicine cabinet after cleaning out the want-nots.

Can you feel the breeze of change coming?  Fall is knocking at our door, and I am excited to say HELLO!  With the change of weather, most of us need to change our closets by putting away some of our Summer gear to make room for our Fall threads. It’s a perfect opportunity to do a Fall Overhaul, but not just a surface purge.  Let’s clean from the rooter to the tooter to include shoes, makeup, jewelry, medicine cabinet and even under the bathroom sink.  If you can’t see what you have how do you expect to use or wear it.

Being a believer of “practice what you teach”, there was an overhaul done this weekend and here are some pictures of the results.  The closet is always kept up-to-date, because of the “purchase rule”.  (For those of you wondering what the purchase rule is…for every item you purchase you need to get rid of an old item in your closet.  It keeps the clutter down and allows you to maintain your closet.)

Items being disposed of due to expiration date or lack of use.

Don’t overwhelm yourself and be sure to take it one section at a time.  You can do it over the weekend or set smaller goals to take care of a section per day.  Take baby steps and before you know it you will be finished. Depending on the item be sure to donate or trash the appropriate items.  There are plenty of local charities, donation bins or friends/family that can use a lending hand.

We know you spent this weekend shopping all the great Labor Day weekend sales.  Go ahead and set some time aside during this week to do a thorough cleaning before Fall kicks into full swing.

P.S.  Don’t forget under the sink and the medicine cabinet.  Two places in general that sometimes are overlooked.  If you need a tip, here is a great general rule of thumb: “If you have to make up a rationale, reason, or excuse to keep it…TOSS IT!”

BUCKETLIST 101

We have all heard of the bucketlist, but for those who have not it is a list consisting of items you want to do and experience before you die.  I have tons of things on my bucketlist to include going to a tanning salon.  Too many of my friends have told me interesting things about tanning.  Well, this past week a friend and I went to tan at Hollywood Tans, which was quite an experience.  It was confusing at first because of the series of questions:

#1 What number do you want so I looked at the board and said 54 (which was the number in the  middle).

#2 Do you want oil?

#3 Do you want goggles or stickers?

Once I struggled through the questions with laughter and confusion, I ended being lead to these space pods, which looked like they were going to send me to another galaxy.  Mentally thinking, beam me up Scottie and praying I don’t get left in there to overcook.  Overall, the experience was fun, between the industrial fan, holding on to the handles, bright beaming lights and wonderful music selection it was like a party in very tiny subway. I am sure a few of you are asking will I do it again.  Perhaps.  And if not, it was wonderful to experience at least one.  <Chris checks off tanning on her Bucketlist>

Why am I sharing this? Life is always about trying new things.  Perhaps something completely outside of your forteit and without trying you will not know if its something you would want to try again.  Sometimes in life, its great to be able to say, “Yes, I tried that once.” So think about it, get up and try something completely off your radar, whether it be an activity all the way to wearing that bold lipstick color.  You will never know if you like something unless you try, which is the key to life.

So, get up, get out and try something completely outside of your comfort zone.  I’m off to my next BucketList adventure.  Let’s us know how it goes!

BATTLE OF CHOICES

Mmmmmm C&C Milkshake

The other day I was having a ‘fattening food’ withdrawal moment were I suddenly craved a large Chickfila Cookies & Cream milkshake.  I was dropping off some clothes at the dry cleaners, which happens to be right next to a Chickfila. Arrgggghhhhh!  I started rationalizing with myself thinking…”you only live once”, “everybody deserves a treat”, “what harm could it really do”.  Instantly, I said out loud to myself…”NO”, in retrospect, I probably looked strange to anyone that could see me in my car.  I haven’t had any fast food in 5 days, which is a long run during these extremely busy days.  I rationalized with myself and figured I could cut up some grapes & strawberries over some vanilla yogurt (Yoplait 100 calorie), which then got me excited to hurry up and get home.  Once I arrived home, I was little disappointed about not getting the milkshake, but more so I was excited!   I conquered a brief moment of weakness.  I decided to not even eat the fruit concoction instead, I sautéed some chicken and laid it over a green salad.  It was scrumdillyumptious!

What’s the correlation?  Choices! It is always easier to make the simple/effortless choice, whether it’s to grab some fast-food, not workout, wear the same outfit, hair & makeup.  You get the hint.  We sometimes don’t want to exert any extra effort to do anything different or that may be good for us.  With minimal effort, I was able to make a delicious meal that was quick & so much better for me.   The same can be said for you choosing a different way to wear your hair or pairing items in your closet differently, for example, wearing polka dots if you always wear stripes.  I hope you are getting the hint.  Challenge yourself to make one small change in your life that will have a huge impact later.

For me…I am giving up eating fast-food and instead make it a once in a blue moon treat.  This is going to be hard, but in the long run saves me money and thousands of calories.  It’s a smart & healthy choice.  What’s yours?  What are you going to challenge yourself to do?  Feel free to share.  We would love to hear from you!

SUMMER SURVIVAL GUIDE

5 Easy Steps to get through Hot Days & Sizzling Nights
1. Dress in Light color such as whites & neutrals to reflect sunlight.  If possible, avoid black at all cost.  Light weight & loose clothing is key because it allows for air circulation.  An example is White linen pants. Great choice!
2. Seek out shade. Umbrellas are your best friend!  Paired with your favorite sundress & sunglasses and your ready to brave the elements. Don’t be afraid to create your own shade.  Added bonus: A wide brim hat protects and adds pizazz.
3. Hydrate. Say no to caffeine such as coffee, sugary sodas and even chocolate because of their dehydrating nature. If you can’t live without these items, try limiting how much you consume.  Also, limit alcohol intake, which is very dehydrating.  Water, coconut water & unsweetened caffeine-free teas are your best bet!  Keep in mind there are certain foods that give a delicious hydrating boost!
4. Protect your skin. Sunblock should be your #1 product these days.  For your face & body be sure to give your skin time to absorb the protection.  Wait about 20 minutes before saying hello to the sun. Free radicals and sun rays causes sun spots, heat rash & premature aging.
5. Make down versus Make-up.  With the summer sun blazing, don’t overwhelm your skin by wearing too much makeup.  These days less is more.  Mascara, lip gloss and pressed powder is all a woman should need these days.  Our recommendation: mascara, blush, lip gloss & concealer (if needed)!
Overall listen to your body! Make wise decisions and enjoy the Summer days & Nights in style.
